主題について語るというよりも、子供に手渡したい物語という事を頭にいれながら色々な作品を手元に置き、思いつく話をするという感じの本でした。構造的に作品に切り込んで行くというより、安易な魔法の使用を戒めたり、悪の位置付けを注意深くみたりと、色々な視点から俯瞰的に作品を眺めるという感じです。

伝承に踏み込むあたりから、『指輪物語』完全読本と同じく眠くなってしまいました。作者が作品に漂う空気を伝えようとしても、北欧系の伝承を知らないので付いていけませんでした。(笑)

その後の"「中つ国」とナルニア"の比較や、最初に書かれている「緑の太陽」をどう表現するかについての小説とヴィジュアルとの比較は、世界の構築の仕方の面でとても面白いものでした。確かにファンタジーの物語には不思議さをスパイスとするモノと、不思議さの連続性で成り立っているモノがあるというのは良く分かりました。
